Okay Gear-hounds, here you will find posts by equipment type.
My first 35mm SLR camera was a Pentax MX, and I used Pentax cameras for my entire analog life. My favorites were the Pentax LX and the medium format Pentax 645. I still have both.
When I dipped my foot in the digital pool, my first camera was a Pentax *istD, a very curious name but I think the Japanese meant for it to be for any kind of -ist (purist, alpinist, exhibitionist, sexist, whatever).
Within a year, I realized that Canon and Nikon both had a much better selection of lenses and digital bodies, so despite protestations from my cousin George – a Nikon analogician* but a Canon digitist* – I switched to Nikon and ran my way through a bunch of their bodies including the d70 (passed on to jon-erik, then sold by him to purchase a lens), d200 (handed down to j-e), d300 (stolen on a beach in tel aviv) and d700 (current).
As for lenses, I tend to travel light. My two mainstays are a 17-35mm f/2.8 (purchased used) and a 70-200 f/2.8 with a couple of tele-converters that I use only when absolutely necessary because they do compromise quality. In addition, I have three prime lenses: 20 f/2.8, 50 f/1.8, and 100 macro f/2.8. I covet a 300mm f/2.8 and would love to have Nikon’s first one, without the vibration reduction which just slows down the focus when shooting sports.
Recently I have been using a couple of pocket point-and-shoots, and I really enjoy the Canon S90 as well as my new iPhone4 (yes, it takes great 5mp pictures, which can fill an Apple cinema display).
